Alliant Techsystems to Run Army's Independence, Mo., Bullet Plant.

Aug. 3 -- The U.S. military's only small-arms bullet factory, the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, will have new management in January.

Alliant Techsystems of Minnesota outbid other firms, including the current contractor, Olin Corp., for the U.S. Army Industrial Operations Command contract. Alliant will lease the Army-owned Lake City plant for 25 years and supply the vast majority of the U.S. Defense Department's small-caliber ammunition needs for at least 10 years.

Alliant has pledged cost-cutting reforms at Lake City, but it is unclear whether any of the estimated 1,000 civilian workers will lose their jobs.
