Lycos Buys into Notion that Online Music Is More Popular Than Sex.

Aug. 6 -- Lycos Inc. plans to announce a $38.8 million acquisition today, based on a surprising traffic pattern it says it has noticed lately on its Internet search engine: Music is more popular than sex.

Specifically, the digital music format known as MP3 has become the term most often used in requests to the Lycos search engine, said Ron Sege, executive vice president of the Waltham-based Internet portal firm.

Sex was the traditional leader, Sege said, but Lycos has been building up its music-oriented section lately because of the shift in interest. Today, Lycos will detail plans to issue 1.1 million additional shares of its stock to acquire closely held Internet Music Distribution Inc. of San Francisco....
