From Laptops to Bed Linens, College Costs Don't End with Tuition.

Aug. 15 -- When freshman Bethany Zurbrigg settles into her Meredith College dorm room this month, she will be surrounded by stuffed animals brought from home, a ton of newly acquired stuff and enough toiletries to last a year.
Bethany and her mother, Nita Zurbrigg, have been shopping and planning for the move all summer long. If mom gives in and buys Bethany the laptop computer she wants, the Durham family will have spent more than $2,700 getting their youngest daughter ready for dorm life.
Even without the new computer, Bethany's stash will cost about $1,000 -- for everything from new bed linens to a telephone answering machine to a rug for the hard dorm floor -- when all the shopping is done.
