Aug. 20 -- FREMONT, Calif. -- How do you celebrate a 57 percent increase in earnings? Well, if you're SMART Modular Technologies Inc., you buy Compaq Computer Corp.'s embedded chip division for a start.

The Fremont-based manufacturer of computer memory modules and other hardware components will acquire Compaq's embedded and real-time product division for an undisclosed sum. The deal covers the division's hardware and software products, proprietary technologies and global team of engineering talent.
