Tempe, Ariz.-Based Utility Opts Out of Family-Friendly Employer Contest.

Sep. 2 -- The Salt River Project, a fixture on Working Mother's list of top employers the past few years, is missing from this year's lineup.

The Tempe-based utility decided not to compete because the already time-consuming application process was expanded, spokesman Jeff Lane said.

"We just chose not to use our time on that this year," he said, citing more pressing matters such as industry deregulation.

Lane said the SRP made the decision despite adding more family-friendly programs in the past year. They include seminars on rearing teens, an online referral service for child care and elder care and a long-term care insurance program.
