Sep. 17 -- IT'S DEJA VU FOR WORKERS AT AIRTOUCH: Less than a year after they received a reprieve from a firing squad, Vodafone AirTouch's Bay Area employees are once again sweating bullets as they mull their uncertain job security.
When England's Vodafone played the role of white knight and rescued AirTouch from a takeover bid by Bell Atlantic last year, nearly 1,000 Bay Area workers employed by the wireless company breathed a collective sigh of relief. Vodafone's successful $74 billion bid represented good news for AirTouch employees because a Bell Atlantic takeover would have wiped out far more Bay Area jobs.
