Sep. 21 -- Tension Envelope Corp., a large, longtime Kansas City-based envelope manufacturer, is acquiring a longtime Kansas City-based competitor, Darling Envelope Corp.

Tension has been in business since 1886, when William Berkowitz started Berkowitz and Co., Advertising Novelties. The company now is run by Berkowitz's great-grandson, William S. Berkley. The company changed its name to Tension in 1944, seven years after acquiring Tension Envelope Co. of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Tension was known for its unique, open-end envelope with one button on the back and one on the flap. The two buttons were secured by a string, and the envelopes came to be called tension envelopes.
