Sep. 22 -- There's an ill riff reverberating through the world of independent guitar shops.
Its name is Guitar Center Inc., a big, national chain from California that's steadily expanding into new markets and putting pressure on smaller competitors.
Now Guitar Center has Austin in its sights with plans to open a store here early next year. The company recently leased more than 15,000 square feet in Northcross Mall at Anderson Lane and Burnet Road, said Ric Richter, the mall's general manager.
That's anything but welcome news to some of the more than a dozen independent Austin guitar sellers. It comes less than a year after Mars Superstore, a Florida-based national chain, came to Austin.
