New Jury's Ruling on Punitive Damages against Ford May Take One Year.

Sep. 23 -- It could be a year or more before a new jury determines punitive damages against Ford Motor Company, after a Stanislaus County Superior Court judge ordered a new trial against the automaker last week.

In July, a jury found that a defective roof on a 1978 Ford Bronco caused the deaths of Ramon, Salustia and Ramiro Romo during an accident near Westley in 1993. It awarded Juan Romo -- the driver of the Bronco when it crashed -- and his two sisters nearly $6 million in compensatory damages and $290 million in punitive damages.

Attorneys representing Ford disputed both verdicts, claiming the Romo family never proved manufacturer defects. Judge Roger Beauchesne on Sept. 16 upheld the liability verdict,...
