Sep. 28 -- PEORIA, Ill. -- The health of our democracy and our free market economy are intertwined and dependent upon leadership, said Max DePree, author and chairman emeritus of Herman Miller Inc.

DePree presented the fall 1999 McCord Lecture at Bradley University Thursday at the Dingeldine Music Center.

Herman Miller, based in Zeeland, Mich., is a global manufacturer of office products. The company's 1998 sales exceeded $1.7 billion.

Herman Miller was founded in 1923 by D. J. DePree, Max DePree's father.
