Oct. 6 -- Palmetto Health Alliance has won the 9th annual Mayor's Corporate Citizen of the Year Award -- the first hospital system to do so.
The award recognizes a Columbia business that has shown a strong leadership role, dedication to community service, employee volunteerism and a commitment to overall citizenship. AMFM Inc. (formerly Southern Star Communications Inc.) won the award in 1998.
Dr. Randolph Smoak, president-elect of the American Medical Association and keynote speaker at Tuesday's award luncheon, highlighted the importance of the charity health care that Palmetto Health Alliance provides the community's poor.
