America Online's New Search Function Will Draw on Human Judgment.

Oct. 11 -- America Online is trying to make a search engine with a human touch.
To reach that goal, designers of AOL's new Version 5.0 software are relying heavily on the Open Directory Project, an organization of about 16,000 editors who inspect and grade sites on the Web -- both within and outside AOL.
The result is a search function on AOL that puts human judgment first. AOL
still uses automated searches of the Web to find topics, but that format plays a secondary role and is not the first thing customers see when they are presented with search conclusions.
