Dell Computer Says Quarterly Profits May Be Lower.

Oct. 19 -- Dell Computer Corp. warned analysts Monday that another unexpected spike in memory chip prices may lower its profits in its third quarter ending Oct. 29.

In a conference call Monday after markets closed, the company said suppliers of dynamic random access memory chips plan to raise prices 25 percent on top of price hikes of more than 250 percent earlier this year. DRAM chips are the most common type used in computers.

The latest increase will add about $75 to the cost of one-third of the PCs Dell will ship this quarter, said Chief Financial Officer Tom Meredith. "With three weeks left, we can't really manage our way around it without it affecting our (profit) margins," he said.
