Big Contracts for Suppliers Expected from SBC Communications' Upgrade.

Oct. 19 -- SBC Communications Inc.'s $6 billion network upgrade plan is expected to mean sizable contracts for Alcatel SA, Nortel Networks Corp. and Lucent Technologies Inc., among other potential suppliers.

SBC, Southwestern Bell's parent company and now the nation's largest local phone company, on Monday confirmed reports that it plans to make high-speed, digital subscriber line Internet service available to 80 percent of its local phone customers in 13 states.

San Antonio-based SBC isn't saying yet who will supply the expansion. And suppliers were reluctant to speak out ahead of a large customer.

But analysts said a sizable portion of the contracts will probably go to Alcatel, currently SBC's...
