Starwood Would Recognize Hotel Union if Selected for Boston Development.

Nov. 2 -- Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has agreed to recognize Hotel Workers Local 26 as the bargaining agent for employees of a proposed convention headquarters hotel if the company is selected to develop the new hotel and a majority of workers sign union cards, a union official said yesterday.

John Wilhelm, president of the 300,000-member Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union in Washington, D.C., yesterday confirmed that Starwood has agreed voluntarily to recognize Local 26 in Boston if the company wins its bid to build a 1,120-room hotel at the proposed $700 million convention center in South Boston. The agreement was hammered out two months ago.
