Nov. 2 -- IRVING, Texas -- Atmel Corp., a leading supplier of computer chips for the wireless telecommunications industry, said yesterday that it plans to buy and revive a semiconductor plant in Irving that was shuttered by Hitachi last year.
The move could be a sign that the semiconductor industry is on the rebound after two years of surpluses and price slashing. It also adds a major player to the area's growing cellular telephone industry.
If all goes as planned, Atmel said, area production would begin in late 2000 with 200 to 500 employees. Atmel and Irving city officials said that employment could increase to 2,500 and that the total investment could reach $2.5 billion during the next 10 years.
