Nov. 17 -- San Francisco's KRON-TV has been purchased for a record $823 million by a mid-sized New York broadcasting company -- beating out media giants from the parent company of NBC TV to Gannett Co., the publisher of USA TODAY.

The sale of KRON-TV -- an NBC affiliate and one of the brightest jewels in the Chronicle Publishing Co.'s continuing asset sale -- comes on the heels of a San Francisco judge's order for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin to keep publishing.
