Nov. 20 -- It will cost more, but the steering committee for the downtown Information Technology Zone decided Friday that competition will lower costs for potential high-tech tenants and help the ITZ grow faster.
On recommendation from consultants, the committee made a bold move and voted to contract three different communications companies to install three different kinds of Internet infrastructure in the city's streets.
The committee decided it would be best to have Southern New England Telecommunications install fiber optics and add digital subscriber line (DSL) technology to existing copper telephone lines, have cable company Tele-Media install cable connections and have Lightpath, a Cablevision...
