British Telecom Must Share Phone Lines with Rival Firms.

Dec. 1 -- British Telecom's smaller rivals saw their shares surge as watchdog Oftel pushed through revolutionary new rules. Director general David Edmonds is forcing BT to make its phone lines into UK households available to rival operators.
Edmonds claims the "major breakthrough" will cut Britain's onerous Internet access charges and encourage rivals to offer new services such as videos, fast Internet and home banking.
However, BT rivals Fibernet (up 60 pence to 1250 pence), Redstone (up 29 pence to 355 pence) and Kingston (up 59 pence to 700 1/2 pence) are angry that a full changeover will be delayed until July 2001. They also say the prices BT will charge them to reach householders are so high that only...
