Pittsburgh Banks Increase Fees for Accounts, Services.

Dec. 11 -- Mellon Bank is raising fees on a handful of accounts and services. Cross-town rival PNC Bank, meanwhile, today begins waiving minimum balances and monthly service charges on newly opened checking accounts as part of a pilot program expected to last at least three months.

Starting Feb. 7, the bounced check fee at Mellon goes from $30 to $35, while the fee for using a non-Mellon automated teller machine bumps up 25 cents to $1.50. Balance inquiries remain free. And certain accounts, such as high-balance "smart" accounts, continue to be exempt from the so-called "foreign" ATM fee.
