Dec. 26--WHERE (ONLY) THE TALL CORN GROWS: Remember the flap last fall about Edmund Morris's biography of Ronald Reagan? Morris invented a fictional first-person narrator in order to make more readable his "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan."

The book has sold briskly, according to Random House -- well enough, but not nearly as well as it might have if it hadn't been savaged by most historians, journalists, and every self-interested interpreter of Reagan's reputation on the political landscape. It has fallen off the bestseller lists.

Overlooked in the fracas was the story of another biography of a Republican president. George Nash's life of Herbert Hoover took the opposite tack from that of Morris: scrupulous, lengthy, objective, scholarly.
