Southwestern Bell Banishes Busy Signals in Central Texas.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 21--Central Texas customers of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. should never get that annoying busy signal on a local call again.

But that doesn't mean that friends and others are standing by waiting for your call.

Instead, Southwestern Bell has replaced its busy signal with a recorded message that says the line is busy. The message then offers the caller the option -- by pressing 3 -- of having the number redialed by computer every 45 seconds for the next 30 minutes. Once the other party answers, the caller's own phone gives off a special ring to alert the caller.

There's a fee of 50 cents for each use of the service, but residential subscribers can pay $2 a month for unlimited automatic redialing.
