FCC Allows Bell Atlantic into New York Long-Distance Market.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 23--Competition for phone service is breaking out all over the place. Too bad that place is across the Hudson.

As expected, Bell Atlantic yesterday won the Federal Communication Commission's nod to offer long distance in New York, the first such approval for a regional Bell company. Bell Atlantic will unleash an ad blitz on Jan. 5 for flat-rate calling plans with no monthly fees or hidden charges, plus the kind of discount combos of local and long-distance service that AT&T, MCI WorldCom and others recently began pitching in the Empire State.

It's bound to be an irritating exercise for New Jerseyans. Trapped in the same TV market as New York, Garden State residents can only watch and weep for now as the marketing wars play out on their screens....
