Burlington Northern, Canadian National Railways Sing Praises of Merger.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 21--The proposed merger of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. with Canadian National Railway Co. would benefit shippers and stockholders, a Burlington Northern spokesman said Monday.
The agreement by the second-biggest U.S. railroad and Canada's largest would create North America's largest railroad, surpassing Omaha-based Union Pacific Railroad.
"We see it as an end-to-end merger of two very efficient rail systems with very little if any duplication," Steve Forsberg, Burlington Northern spokesman, said from his office in Kansas City, Kan. "It is a merger that makes sense for the shippers we serve."
