Jan. 1--New Year's Eve in Aberdeen wasn't spectacular, but it was historical: 2000 arrived and the power stayed on.

With most of the world already safely into the new year by the time it reached Aberdeen, the mood was one of quiet confidence among emergency officials gathered late Friday night in the basement of the Brown County Courthouse.

"We have an advantage, watching all the other time zones first," said Aberdeen city engineer Robin Bobzien, one of a dozen people assembled to coordinate efforts just in case the millennium bug shut down critical systems in the county. "It gives you a little sense of security."
