Jan. 1--Water taps flowed and toilets flushed after midnight Friday -- two crucial Aberdeen city services unscathed by the threat of New Year computer glitches.

The drinking water plant north of Aberdeen was fully manual for decades, so city officials were confident there would be no problems due to the date change associated with computers. Equipment now being installed during a plant upgrade is fully compliant with the switch to the year 2000, according to plant superintendent Rick Wahlen. Generators would keep things running when power is lost for any reason, he said -- although that wasn't a problem as the year changed, either.
