Blizzard Slows Production at Alaska BP Amoco Plant.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 8--In the final days of 1999, a ground blizzard on Alaska's North Slope packed snow into equipment at BP Amoco's Endicott production pad and forced oil operators to temporarily suspend production.

The amount of oil or gas from the Endicott field dropped from more than 40,000 barrels per day to about 2,000 barrels per day on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to figures from the state Department of Revenue.

"Snow clogged the intake filters on the compressors on the field," BP Amoco spokesman Ronnie Chappell said Thursday. "The wind was blowing so hard that we were unwilling to send workers out into the field to shovel out the area."
