Jan. 17--CARD HELPS TAXPAYERS BUY MORE WITH REFUND: Get a tax refund, get a fatter rebate on a new GM car?

Sounds odd, but H&R Block Inc. has a new way to help taxpayers spend their tax refunds.

General Motors Corp. and other retailers have hooked up with Block in a rebate program called Refund Rewards.

Taxpayers who pay H&R Block to prepare their returns can receive a plastic card giving them buying power up to the amount of their expected refund. The card -- it is not a credit card -- can then be used toward GM cars, Sears appliances, Northwest Airlines tickets, cruises and other goods.

However, you have to wait for the card like you would with a regular refund.
