Low Demand over New Year's Hurts Delta's Ridership.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 7--The Y2K bug didn't ground Delta Air Lines, but it took a bite out of ridership.

Delta said December revenue passenger miles fell 3.3 percent vs. the same month a year earlier, despite a 0.2 percent gain in seat capacity. The Atlanta-based airline cited "lower demand during the holiday and year-end period."

Delta was among several carriers that canceled hundreds of flights on New Year's weekend because of slack demand by Y2K-wary travelers. Many planes that did fly on Dec. 30 and 31 carried only handfuls of passengers.

For all of 1999, Delta said it handled 106 million passengers, up slightly from 1998, maintaining its status as the world's largest airline in terms of customers. It ranks third in revenue passenger miles behind United...
