Layoff Notices Are on the Way at AT&T.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 27--AT&T Corp., the second-largest telecommunications employer in Atlanta, will begin issuing layoff notices to employees in consumer and business long-distance operations as early as next week.
Company officials were unable to say how many cuts would be made or how many would be in Georgia -- if any.
The huge company, which has announced plans to slash $2 billion in costs this year, has 22,400 employees in its consumer division and 27,800 in its business division. Both divisions are represented among AT&T's 10,000 employees in Georgia, most of whom are in metro Atlanta, said company spokeswoman Ruthlyn Newell.
"Those employees represent virtually every aspect of AT&T's business," she said.
