Rival Firms to Make Joint Bid for Norwegian Cruise Line's Parent.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Feb. 3--In what may be the final blow for Norwegian Cruise Line's independence, rival suitors Carnival Corp. and Star Cruises agreed Tuesday to join forces in a bid for the Miami cruise line's parent company, NCL Holding.

The deal likely ends a two-month struggle that began when Carnival, the world's largest cruise line, offered to buy Norwegian, the fourth-largest cruise company. Since then, NCL has been hoodwinked by Star, which offered to help the company defeat Carnival while secretly gaining control of the Oslo company. Just two days ago, Carnival agreed to come to NCL's rescue in turning back Star's takeover bid.
