Motorola Plans Package for `World Phone'.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Feb. 3--Motorola said Wednesday that it will market an electronics and software package that will allow cell phones to work in both European and domestic systems.

Most European systems use the GSM standard, or Global Solution Mobile communication, while American systems use either the TDMA standard, Time Division Multiple Access, or the CDMA standard, Code Division Multiple Access. The Motorola system will support both GSM and TDMA, allowing users to flip a switch and use the phone in the different systems. Manufacturers can add CDMA support.

The new system will be marketed by Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector to cell phone manufacturers. Several of the components will be manufactured at the company's Valley plants.
