Pig Ownership Approved by Canon, Colo., City Council.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Feb. 9--CANON CITY, Colo.--Pot belly pig owners can proudly parade their porcine pets within city limits after City Council Monday pared down a pig prohibition.
During the routine process of annexing property owned by Phil Pugin at 3255 Grandview Ave. on the east end of town, "staff discovered a preclusion from keeping swine in a rural-living zoned district," said Maryanne Brenner, city planner.
Brenner said livestock animals such as cattle, goats and horses are allowed in rural-living zones. The zoning regulations allow just one animal per 1,500 square feet, Brenner said.
Brenner asked the council to consider amending the zoning regulations to remove the pig prohibition.
Pugin said he does not intend to breed pigs.
