Feb. 16--Laurie Langbauer came up with an analogy for her harried life recently while watching the circus. She imagined herself as a tightrope walker, juggling her a 80-hour-a-week job with the needs of her 5-year-old son, hoping she wouldn't fall into the net below.

Most of the time, she doesn't. She and her husband, Terry, a medical student, rise at 6 o'clock. And for the rest of her long day, Langbauer, 44, combines the tasks of mother, English professor and graduate student adviser.

Luckily, her employer, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has helped her keep her balance. Every day, she takes her son to the day-care center on campus. She has worked out an arrangement to leave her office at 5 and work from home when he is asleep....
