CEO of Texas-Based Kimberly-Clark Expects Value to Catch Up with Results.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Feb. 21--In 1997, after nearly two decades of double-digit annual earnings growth, Irving-based Kimberly-Clark Corp. went into a 15-month slide. Although the company -- whose most popular products are Huggies diapers, Kleenex tissues and Scott paper towels -- continued to make money during those five quarters, the profits were down slightly compared with the same period the year before.

Analysts blamed the decline partly on the $9.4 billion purchase of Scott Paper Co. in 1995, the biggest acquisition in the company's 128-year history. Since July 1998, however, Kimberly-Clark has seen its profits rise steadily again. Wayne R. Sanders, chairman and CEO, credits Thomas J. Falk, who was recently promoted to president and chief operating officer, for the turnaround....
