New Air-Traffic Control System Goes Active in Indianapolis.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 1--After more than a decade of anticipation, the Federal Aviation Administration's Indianapolis regional center today will activate new air traffic control equipment.

Display System Replacement, DSR in FAA-speak, replaces outmoded radar monitors installed in 1973 that use 1960s technology. The new DSR is supposed to increase airline safety and be more reliable.

Indianapolis is the 19th of 21 FAA regional centers to get DSR. The local complex manages air space over parts of seven states and handles flights between the time they take off and land. Controllers at local airports manage takeoffs and landings.

Officials in Indianapolis hope they'll benefit from the experience of others.
