eBay Deal Opens Online Auction Site for Cars.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 8--San Jose-based eBay bought into AutoTrader.com on Tuesday and immediately opened a joint online auction site with the used-car classified giant.
The new site, www.ebay-autotrader.com, will become a big player in "a dynamic, rapidly growing marketplace," said Chip Perry, the president and CEO of the Atlanta-based AutoTrader.
"It'll be two gorillas in the ring that are dancing," Perry said. "We're the gorillas. Everybody else is going to have to figure out how to deal with an auction site that has the most critical mass."
Tuesday's announcement was short on specifics. Neither party would describe the financial arrangement, other than to say that eBay paid cash to join AutoTrader.
Nor would the executives say how many used cars...
