Canon City, Colo., City Council Hears Arguments on Water Fluoridation.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 8--CANON CITY, Colo.--City Council voted 4-3 Monday against accepting bids for water treatment plant improvements that would have included use of fluoride.

The city broached the subject of fluoridation during the summer of 1997 when a survey was circulated with water bills. A majority of water users indicated they favored fluoridation.

Then-city administrator Steve Thacker said the question was brought up at that time "because while we are in the process of building a new pre-treatment facility at the water plant, this is an opportune and cost-effective time to put in fluoridation equipment."
