Carnival, Star Cruises Call Off Purchase of Norwegian Cruise Lines.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 17--Carnival Corp. said late Thursday that it has called off its deal with Star Cruises to acquire NCL Holding ASA, parent of Miami's Norwegian Cruise Lines.
The joint announcement by Carnival and Star seemingly ends a three-month saga that saw more twists and turns than a Hollywood mystery.
Carnival, the world's largest cruise line, said the two companies were unable to agree on the details of how the joint venture would operate.
"We just didn't have any agreement on the direction of the company going forward, and it didn't seem like we were going to come to any agreement," said Tim Gallagher, Carnival spokesman. "Both parties decided to just unravel the deal."
