FBI Probes Hacker Attack at Virginia College.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 15--HARRISONBURG, Va.--The FBI is investigating an attack on the James Madison University computer network that has a profile similar to the hacking that paralyzed some of the Internet's most popular Web sites last month.

The assault slowed down JMU's network operations a week after a wave of computer terrorism paralyzed sites such as Amazon.com and Buy.com.

JMU discovered the problem Feb. 15 and cleared its system the next day, said Gary Flynn, JMU's security engineer. The FBI is including the incident in an investigation of the commercial web site attacks because the school's network traffic was clogged the way the others were, Flynn said.

"The FBI is encouraging people who find these [hacking] tools to report them so they can track...
