Mar. 23--MADNESS WEIGHS ON FED: Somehow the Federal Reserve's job these days feels a whole lot like the challenge of constructing the wildly popular March Madness college basketball tournament.
Don't get me wrong. There's no comparison in the consequence of arranging basketball games and managing the world's biggest competition, the U.S. economy.
So excuse the sports metaphor, but there's an odd parallel in how Fed boss Alan Greenspan's team and the collegiate basketball czars seek balance in their niches.
Sure, basketball czars settle a debate by giving a team with a tenuous track record a tough road to the potential championship. Meanwhile, the Fed makes its point by tweaking interest rates.
