Internet Access Firm PSINet to Acquire Houston-Based Computer Consultant.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 23--Houston-based computer consultant company Metamor Worldwide agreed Wednesday to be acquired by PSINet, one of the largest Internet access and service companies, in a $1.49 billion stock-swap deal.

Combining Metamor -- which primarily sells and develops custom software packages and does network design consulting -- with Herndon, Va.-based PSINet would create a one-stop shop for businesses that want to set up and maintain an online presence, making PSINet a more formidable player in a highly competitive market.

PSINet also would get Metamor's 80 percent ownership of a Chicago-based electronic commerce developer, Xpedior.
