Virginia to Hold Hearings on American Electric Power's Proposed Line.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Mar. 23--American Electric Power's proposed 765,000-volt power line is being built to boost the company's profits, not to provide reliable electricity and relieve stress on its transmission system in Southwest Virginia, a consultant for a group opposed to the line said Wednesday.

In testimony filed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission, David Blecker, a Wisconsin-based consultant hired by the Bland County Board of Supervisors, said AEP's transmission problems stem from an increase in wholesale selling of electricity to other utilities.

AEP has said in its application to the SCC that the power line is needed because customer demands for electricity have increased 136 percent since 1973, when the last high voltage power line was built.
