Mar. 8--VeriSign Inc. made a $21 billion bet Tuesday that people registering a Web site address will also want to buy VeriSign's security software as many of them begin to set up shop on the Internet.
Mountain View-based VeriSign agreed to buy Network Solutions Inc., the leading registrar of Internet domain names like amazon.com and whitehouse.gov, in a stock deal valued at about $20.7 billion before the deal was announced Tuesday morning.
The combined company hopes to be a one-stop shop for basic Internet services. After a business registers a name for a new dot-com, VeriSign wants to help it create an identity on the Web, get its site up and running, establish e-mail accounts and set up a secure system for handling transactions.
