Mar. 27--Chris Aragon thought it sounded too good to be true. And it was.
An office colleague told Aragon that he could hand over his retirement money to a firm that guaranteed a 24 percent return.
But instead of just writing out a check, Aragon did a little checking on the Irvine company called DFJ Italia, which boasted of billions of dollars in assets, majority interests in 361 companies and a star-studded client list that included model Kim Alexis and former Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson.
It's a good thing Aragon followed his instincts.
Two weeks ago, DFJ clients began learning that their money might be gone. Investigators are looking into allegations that the firm ran a pyramid scheme that paid off old investors...
