Apr. 4--A federal judge's ruling that Microsoft Corp. abused its market power and violated antitrust laws drew praise from many local technology executives, who have long complained about the tactics of the software giant.

But now what? Even some of Microsoft's sharpest critics are divided on the question of how to temper the company's power, and government officials have yet to reveal possible remedies they have pursued in settlement talks with the company.

To many high-tech executives, the problem is that no matter how improper Microsoft's conduct, officials may have a hard time devising remedies that would improve the situation.
