Judge Considers Ways to Alter Microsoft's Operating Methods.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 4--U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled yesterday that Microsoft violated federal antitrust laws, but now he must decide how to end the software giant's monopoly over computer operating systems.

Those measures include anything from new restrictions on how Microsoft markets its products and services to a complete breakup of the Redmond, Wash., company.

But whatever he decides, consumers will not see any impact anytime soon.

Judge Jackson could decide that Microsoft should be broken into several companies, just as AT&T in 1984 was divided into several companies that came to be known as the "Baby Bells."

Or he could rule that specific remedies should be taken to prevent Microsoft from conducting monopolistic practices...
