Judge Finds Microsoft Violated Antitrust Law.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 4--Microsoft Corp. systematically violated the nation's antitrust laws, trampling competitors as it tried to protect and extend its powerful position in computer software, a federal judge ruled Monday in the biggest case of the digital era.

Microsoft's Windows operating system already runs about nine out of 10 personal computers. The judge's legal conclusions -- and the penalties he metes out later this year -- will almost certainly restrict the software giant's attempts to leverage that monopoly power into new arenas like consumer Web services and software for large server computers.
