More Civil Lawsuits against Microsoft Likely to Seek Billions.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 2--Even if Microsoft receives what it considers to be a light punishment in its antitrust case with the government, it still faces at least 96 civil lawsuits filed by companies and individuals.
And the lawyers who have filed these lawsuits say they'll likely seek billions of dollars in damages from the software company.
The lawsuits claim Microsoft used an illegal monopoly over its Windows operating system to prevent other companies from entering the operating system market. That illegal monopoly allowed Microsoft to charge more for Windows than the market otherwise would have allowed, alleges Michael Hausfeld, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who represents some of the plaintiffs.
