Apr. 8--IRVINE, Calif.--Avionics companies are scrambling to wire airliners for live television and e-mail service, and experts say high-speed Internet access could be available as soon as next year.

Sextant In-Flight Systems, of Irvine, and Primex Aerospace, of Redmond, Wash., announced advances this week, just prior to the In-Flight Passenger Entertainment Conference in London.

But so far, no company has put together a system powerful enough to let jet passengers surf the Net as they do at home.
